What is a Saree?
A Sari or Saree is a strip of unstitched cloth around five meters in length that is draped over the body in various styles. It is the Indian women's traditional dress. It is not only popular in India but also worn in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Burma and Malaysia. The most common style to wear a sari is to be wrap it around the waist with one end tucked, pleat it and then draped over the shoulder.
The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (underskirt), with a blouse forming the upper garment. The blouses are done in different neck and sleeve styles too. These days, blouse fabric is part of the sari and is stitched using the same fabric.
Sarees come in various fabrics such as cotton, silk, georgette and chiffon. These can vary from very simple thread woven ones to more dressy with a lot of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery with gold and silver thread.
